Feeling unworthiness is pretty common. Often we feel this way because we doubt our worth. In our culture it’s so easy to feel ‘less than’ with the onslaught of perfect-looking people with their perfect relationships and perfect jobs – at least how they’re pictured in media.
But how do we get beyond the feelings of inadequacy when they creep in? What motivates us to ditch the idea that we aren’t enough and begin to accept our greatness?
As a former model, I understood that a model is never good enough. She is always photoshopped to perfection and her value is strictly based on her exterior. Sadly, I just accepted this ridiculous reality about the profession. But after leaving the modeling world, I remember a time when those feelings of inadequacy were stronger than ever.
I was back home attempting to put my life back in order but couldn’t shake the idea that I was not enough and definitely not good enough for a second chance. I remembered that a nearby Church had an 24 hour adoration chapel and went with the thought – “if he can’t help me, nobody can.”
The tears could not be stopped that night, so I just let them go. I told him how horrible I feel about myself, my past, and my fear that I would never persevere in doing the right thing. He just listened. I cried until I felt exhausted. Hunched over, sitting on my knees on the floor, I looked up at him. I saw him and he saw me –the broken, tear-soaked, confused girl who just admitted every fear and fault.
Sitting in that little room I found out I was enough.
When Jesus, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, looked at me – I was enough for him. He didn’t want to make my thighs smaller, teeth straighter or hair shinier. I was enough for him. Granted, my heart was like Humpty Dumpty – broken and needed mending – but he still accepted and loved me.
God doesn’t want to photoshop you. You are enough. Too many women believe that they are not enough, not worthy of forgiveness or second chances. I get it. I used to believe that. And while you may very well feel that way, it is not reality.
Here are 5 quick reminders that you are enough:
1. When you feel like you can’t get beyond your past
“Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5)
“Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
2. When you feel unloved
“You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you” (Isaiah 43:4)
3. When you feel unwanted
“You are my witnesses, says the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe in me.” (Isaiah 43:10)
4. When you doubt God will bring you happiness
“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalms 37:4)
5. When you feel aimless
“For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all of your heart, I will be found by you, says the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
Realizing you are enough is about knowing your worth. While the world reminds you what you lack, Holy Scripture reminds you of what you have with Christ Jesus – a life that was purchased at a price and worth dying for. You. Are. Enough.
